Life Forward offers ultrasounds at no cost to our clients. Are you wondering why Life Forward offers this procedure and how it might be helpful to you as you face an unplanned pregnancy? Here’s some practical information that may help you decide if having Life Forward perform an ultrasound will benefit you as you consider all your options.

First, it’s important to know that Life Forward performs Limited Obstetrical Ultrasounds. “What on earth does this mean?” You may be asking. “I thought all ultrasounds were the same!” Actually, there are many different types of ultrasound examinations that look at a variety of things in the human body.

So, what is a Limited Obstetrical Ultrasound? Let’s break it down.

  • Limited: A limited examination is performed when a specific question requires investigation.

  • Obstetrical: Relating to childbirth and pregnancy

  • Ultrasound: Sound waves that are too high pitched for the human ear to hear.  With an ultrasound machine these sound waves are used to create an image.

In summary a Limited Obstetrical Ultrasound exam is performed to take images of a pregnant woman’s womb to investigate and answer specific questions. This can be done by scanning an abdominal transducer (probe) over a woman’s belly or by inserting a transvaginal transducer into her vagina. We look on top of the belly when a woman is further along in pregnancy (above 11 weeks) and we look with the internal probe when she is earlier in pregnancy (below 11 weeks).

What does this mean for you? A Limited obstetrical ultrasound can help confirm the presence of a pregnancy that is inside your uterus. The procedure can also determine how far along your pregnancy is. Also, an ultrasound can determine if there is a heartbeat.

This will be important information for you to have as you explore all your options regarding your unplanned pregnancy. Additionally, our trained medical professionals are available to answer your questions, give you additional information about resources available to you and support you during this challenging time in your life. You don’t have to go through this alone. We’re here to listen and to help.
